Murang’a resident Florence Waithera is still recovering from the psychological and physical abuse she endured throughout her marriage. Just two days after giving birth, she claims her husband pushed himself on her. When she sobbed and screamed, he startlingly said, “That’s why I married you.”
Florence grew up in Murang’a before relocating to Nakuru. She had to work as a house girl to make ends meet because life wasn’t easy. When she met a young man at church, her life changed. They grew close, and she moved in with the pastor after receiving his approval. What appeared to be a sacred union soon turned into a nightmare.
She believed that peace and love would result from marrying a pastor’s son. Rather, it was shame and anguish. Her mother-in-law was a monster once she became pregnant. Florence was still made to get up very early and perform household duties like a slave despite her condition.
Florence had hardly had time to recover after giving birth when her husband returned home and insisted on having sex. He didn’t care that she tried to resist. He pushed himself on her that night. Her spirit was broken by the suffering, which went beyond the physical.
“That’s why I married you,” he remarked, looking her in the eye when she opened up about it the following morning. Seeking assistance, she confided in her mother-in-law that she was broken. “Do you want him to sleep with me instead?” the woman asked sarcastically, shocking her even more.
Florence knew she was alone that day.
The situation deteriorated. Two months later, she ended up in the hospital after being severely beaten by her mother-in-law and husband. Florence made the decision to leave the marriage that day, bruised but unbroken.
