Mehmet Özcan, a Galatasaray analyst, has shed light on why Victor Osimhen allowed his teammate, Barış Alper Yılmaz, to take a penalty during the 3-0 victory over Fenerbahçe at Rams Park on Sunday evening.
Osimhen, who was returning from injury, had earlier put the hosts ahead before Yılmaz doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the second half.
The decision caught many supporters off guard, given the Nigerian striker’s status as the club’s primary penalty taker and his strong record from the spot.
Speaking on the 10 Numara YouTube channel, Özcan suggested that the decision may have been influenced by considerations surrounding Yılmaz’s future at the club.
“My reliable source on the intelligence front advised me to ‘look into why Barış Alper Yılmaz took the penalty in the Fenerbahçe match,’” he stated, as reported by habersarikirmizi.
“Osimhen has been impeccable with penalties. Perhaps he wished to avoid missing the chance to score in his last derby match for Galatasaray and to demonstrate that he is a ‘True Galatasaray player.’”
Osimhen’s gesture has since been interpreted as a sign of leadership and strong team spirit, underlining his growing influence within the squad since his arrival.
The 27-year-old has registered 20 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.
