The assault on an Okai Akhani in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area, by members of a local vigilante group has prompted the Edo State Police Command to request a comprehensive investigation.

Moses Yamu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, revealed this to reporters in Benin City on Monday, according to the ZINGTIE.

According to Yamu, Monday Agbonika, the Commissioner in charge of the Command, who issued the directive, stated that the goal of the investigation is to determine the facts surrounding the attack, find the perpetrators, and make sure the law holds them accountable.

He pledged that regardless of the status of those involved, the Command would not tolerate any human rights abuses or acts of impunity.

The incident happened on Saturday, July 26, 2025, and a video footage of it has since gone viral, causing considerable public outrage and condemnation, he claims.

“The Edo State Police Command is aware of a disturbing incident involving the alleged brutalisation of Hon. Okai Akhani by individuals identified as members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

“The Command condemns in strong terms any form of unlawful assault, cruel treatment, or abuse of authority by individuals or groups operating under any guise.

“Accordingly, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice by the law.

“The Command will not condone any acts of impunity or human rights violations, irrespective of the status of the individuals involved.

“While we continue to support collaborative efforts in community policing, including the role of vigilante groups in complementing security operations, such roles must be carried out within the ambit of the law and with respect for the rights and dignity of all citizens”, he said.

However, the Command asked the public to maintain their composure, follow the law, and give the Police time to conduct a thorough investigation into the occurrence.

He promised that further information would be released by the police as the inquiry developed.

According to ZINGTIE, Okai Akhani was assaulted at a town hall meeting held at Auchi council hall for lawmakers from the Edo North senatorial district, both at the state and national legislature, to inform the public about their stewardship.

It was learned that at the start of the program, people who were recognized as belonging to the local vigilante group broke into the building, fired intermittently to scatter the crowd, and then attacked the victim.

Additionally, it was discovered that the victim was sent for medical treatment to an unnamed hospital in the area.
