According to the African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) non-resigned National Executive Committee, leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola are invited to join the party but are required to formally leave their prior parties.
According to the NEC, in accordance with the guidelines of the Electoral Act 2022, the newcomers must additionally register as ADC members at the ward level in their home states.
They contend that by breaking the rules, the politicians run the possibility of facing legal action, which would damage the coalition’s reputation.
The ADC’s non-resigned National Executive Committee urged party members to remain composed in the face of the contentious discussion surrounding its National Chairmanship.
The party praised Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, its departing National Chairman, for what they called his visionary leadership during a press conference in Abuja on Monday.
Additionally, the NEC confirmed that its previous Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, was the rightful Acting National Chairman.
Rejecting what it called illegitimate takeover attempts, the party said, “We denounce recent efforts to install parallel leadership.
“The purported ‘resignation letter’ of Nafiu Bala (dated May 18, 2025) is confirmed fraudulent, lacking official ADC letterhead and contradicted by Nwosu’s July 2 statement,” they said.
“We welcome leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola and others but we emphasize formal resignation from previous parties must be documented.
“Registration at ward levels in home states is mandatory per the Electoral Act.
“Failure to comply risks legal challenges and undermines coalition credibility.
“Hon. Nafiu Bala will oversee daily operations and prepare for a National Convention within 90 days.
“We will seek INEC’s formal endorsement of Bala’s acting chairmanship and litigate counterfeit documents.
“It call on its members to report irregularities to the NWC Secretariat and pphold Article 9.5 which says that “No non-member shall hold office.”
