Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has opened up about his recent experience with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former governor was reportedly held by the anti-corruption agency in Abuja in connection with allegations of cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion.
Speaking to his supporters upon his return to Sokoto on Thursday, Tambuwal shared that he had initially received an invitation from the EFCC and willingly presented himself at their office on August 6.
He explained that after undergoing initial questioning, he was released but instructed to return on August 10 and 11 for further sessions.
Tambuwal recounted that following extended questioning during the second visit, his legal representatives requested his release. However, EFCC officials insisted that his release would only be granted if he provided two sureties.
He added that the agency specifically required the sureties to be federal civil servants at the director level, each with official letters of introduction from their respective workplaces.
“I told them to go back and tell the chairman of the EFCC that I am a former Speaker of the House of Representatives with an unblemished record, a two-term Governor of Sokoto State, a serving Senator, and a Commander of the Order of the Niger. I should be allowed to go on self-recognition”, he said.
The former governor lamented that despite the appeals, the EFCC operatives refused to vary the bail conditions but opted to detain him until the bail conditions were met the following day.
Tambuwal, who asserted that his detention was politically motivated, insisted that he cannot be intimidated.
“I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be blackmailed. No one can tarnish my records.
“In Nigeria today, there are two lines: those with Bola Tinubu and his government, and those with the people of Nigeria. We chose to stand with the people,” he declared.
