A suspected vote-buyer in Kaduna city was apprehended by security personnel with N25,963,000 in cash barely hours before the state’s bye-elections are scheduled to start in the city.
Nigeria Police Force agents working with the Department of State Services, DSS captured the suspect, Shehu Aliyu Patangi, at a well-known hotel on Turunku Road at around 3:30 in the morning.
According to DSP Mansir Hassan, spokesman for the Kaduna Police Command, initial inquiries showed the funds were intended to sway voters and jeopardize the election process. The defendant appealed for leniency and confessed during questioning, he added.
Hassan cited CP Rabiu Muhammad, the Commissioner of Police, when he stated that the Command would not think twice about dealing with anyone who could jeopardize free and fair elections.
“The suspect was arrested with the said amount, believed to have been earmarked for bribing voters. He confessed to the crime and begged for mercy. We wish to reiterate that anyone found attempting to undermine the electoral process will face the full wrath of the law,” CP Muhammad warned.
Additionally, the Command warned political actors and their supporters against using violence, thuggery, or other unlawful actions, emphasizing that reliable intelligence indicated that certain politicians were planning to cause trouble.
