Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over the rising number of brutal killings of innocent, unarmed Nigerians, describing the trend as a national crisis that endangers the very essence of the country’s shared humanity.

On Tuesday, armed men launched an attack on a mosque during early morning prayers in Unguwan Mantau, a community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State. The assault claimed the lives of no fewer than 32 worshippers.

The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, revealed that the massacre was a retaliatory strike. According to him, it followed an incident where local residents had earlier confronted and lynched individuals believed to be bandits. During that clash, villagers reportedly recovered three motorcycles, seized two AK-47 rifles, and managed to free kidnapped victims from the nearby Ruwan Sanyi village.

Responding via a post on his X account on Wednesday, Atiku remarked that such violent attacks are no longer random but have become a consistent and disturbing pattern across northern Nigeria and beyond.

He criticized the government’s attitude toward the escalating violence, suggesting it reflects an unwillingness to acknowledge the severity of the crisis.

The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election emphasized that it is high time the government gave top priority to its constitutional responsibility of protecting the lives and property of its citizens.

“The wanton killings of innocent Nigerians have reached the epidemic level. Only on Tuesday, in Katsina, at least 27 innocent worshippers were massacred inside a mosque by marauding bandits during morning prayers.

“This attack was not just against a community; it was an assault on our collective humanity,” he wrote.
