Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni, has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, following the outcome of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.
Speaking during Arise Television’s ‘Morning Show’, Rufai urged Wike to stop what he described as ‘gaslighting’ Nigerians over the result of the poll.
The broadcaster rejected claims that the Federal Government did not deploy its influence and resources during the election.
According to Rufai, considerable political and financial resources were allegedly committed towards securing victory for the APC, but the efforts ultimately did not produce the desired result.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke the winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11, leaving the incumbent with a margin of 66,252 votes.
Wike had earlier claimed that the APC could have won the election if President Bola Tinubu had decided to deploy the full weight of federal power.
Reacting to the minister’s position, Rufai dismissed the argument as denial and ‘gaslighting’ of Nigerians.
He argued that the assertion that federal influence was not deployed was difficult to reconcile with the level of political activity and resources allegedly committed to the election.
Rufai maintained that interests aligned with the Federal Government made significant efforts to influence the outcome but failed to secure an APC victory because Osun voters resisted the pressure.
