Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the general elections of 2023, called the just finished Local Governments election in Rivers State a “mockery of democracy.”

Late on Sunday, Obi posted on his official X handle, saying that the behavior of the group was a double tragedy for the nation’s democracy because it was rascality carried too far.

He claims that when an illegally constituted Sole Administrator holds an election that ought to give the people more authority, it is not democracy but rather a flagrant violation of its fundamental principles.

The former governor of Anambra state went on to say that such acts are morally repugnant, legally impossible, and unconstitutional.

He went on to say that the acts convey the perilous idea that the rule of law can be disregarded at the whim of the powerful.

“But the truth remains unshaken: illegality can never give birth to legitimacy. Any structure erected on a foundation of lawlessness is a danger to both the state and the people.

“Nigeria cannot afford to continue on this perilous path. We cannot pretend to practise democracy while silencing the will of the people – especially at the grassroots, where democracy matters most,” he wrote.
