Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has opened up about her former marriage, sharing how she found the courage to leave despite facing public judgment and widespread misconceptions about her strength.

Speaking in a heartfelt interview with media host Chude Jideonwo, the entrepreneur recounted the emotional toll of enduring a turbulent relationship under public scrutiny, while privately battling challenges many were unaware of.

Makinwa explained that people often misunderstand those who survive difficult experiences, assuming the situation couldn’t have been that serious simply because the individual survived and moved forward.

“People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back 10 mins stronger, it unsettles others. Instead of learning from it, they see your strength as a threat. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it,” she said.

She further revealed that the public nature of her relationship played a major role in her decision to leave.

Had it been more private, she believes she might have felt pressured to stay longer.

“Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have been dangerous for me. If I stayed, how I felt would have consumed my entire life,” she added.

As a mother, she emphasized that prioritizing her well-being was essential. Walking away from what she described as a toxic environment wasn’t easy, but she believed it was necessary for her survival and personal growth.
