U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed hope that the individual accused of killing Charlie Kirk will face the death penalty if convicted.
The suspect, Tyler Robinson, was taken into custody by the FBI after a two-day search across Utah.
Robinson, aged 22, was turned in by his father, Matt Robinson, leading to his eventual arrest.
Authorities reported that the elder Robinson managed to get his son to admit to the crime.
He then reached out to a clergy member, who subsequently alerted the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was eventually detained by U.S. Marshals around 10 p.m. local time.
“He’s going to be found guilty I imagine. And I hope he gets the death penalty,” Trump said during a live appearance on Fox TV.
“Charlie Kirk was the finest person. He didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard, and so well. Everybody liked him.”
Mr Kirk, 31, a father of two, was shot dead by a gunman who used a hunting rifle to fire a single shot across the campus of Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
