The Nigerian Army has refuted claims that its personnel intimidated or harassed residents of Cross River communities involved in an ongoing land dispute.
In a statement released on Sunday, the 82 Division dismissed the allegations against troops from the 245 Battalion, describing them as “false, misleading, and intended to undermine the dedication of soldiers striving to uphold peace in the region.”
According to the Division, the soldiers were stationed in Ikom and Obubra Local Government Areas purely for internal security duties, with the goal of protecting residents, safeguarding vital infrastructure, and promoting stability in the region.
“Troops of 245 Battalion are currently deployed in the general area for internal security operations. Their presence is strictly to assist civil authorities for the preservation of public order in full compliance with constitutional provisions,” the statement read.
The Army added that on September 19, 2025, troops responded promptly to renewed hostilities between the Alesi and Ochon communities to prevent further violence and restore calm.
Reiterating its impartial role, the Division clarified that it has no interest in the land ownership dispute and remains focused solely on maintaining law and order.
“Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property,” it said.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and human rights, assuring the people of Alesi and Ochon of its neutral stance. It also urged local leaders to pursue peaceful and legal solutions to their disagreements.
Finally, the Army advised the public to disregard any reports intended to derail peace efforts and encouraged citizens to report credible security concerns or misconduct through official channels.
