Agege Local Council, in collaboration with Inspire Lagos Food Market, has rolled out a food subsidy scheme that cuts the prices of staple commodities by half, bringing immediate relief to more than 3,000 vulnerable residents grappling with soaring food costs.

The initiative, launched just three weeks into the new administration, was introduced to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, which has pushed many low-income households into hunger.

Acting Chairman of the council, Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, said the partnership with Inspire Lagos was deliberately targeted at the most disadvantaged. “This programme is designed to support those in need, particularly the elderly, people with disabilities, and the poorest households in the area,” he explained.

Shoppers enjoyed significant discounts on 16 staple items including rice, beans, yam, semovita, pasta, noodles, garri, palm oil, vegetable oil, and frozen chicken. For example, a carton of noodles that sells for ₦10,000 in the open market went for ₦5,000, while chicken prices dropped from ₦6,000 per kilo to ₦3,000.

The council noted that the initiative will be held quarterly, with the next edition planned for December. Alongside the subsidy, authorities are prioritising sanitation, drainage clearance, and waste management across Agege’s seven wards.

Convener of Inspire Lagos Food Market, Abiola Adebanjo, stressed that the programme supports global goals. “This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 on zero hunger,” he said.

Since its launch in August 2024, the Inspire Lagos initiative has extended to Surulere, Shomolu, Ifako-Ijaye, Ojodu, and Orile-Agege, with plans to cover all 20 local councils and 37 LCDAs in Lagos State.

Head of Agriculture and Social Services, Aderonke Tomilayo Ogundiran, pointed to additional interventions to uplift families. She explained, “An empowerment scheme providing ₦100,000 to vulnerable households has been introduced to lift them out of food insecurity and improve their livelihoods.”

Ogundiran described the subsidy market as unprecedented. “This is the first of its kind in this area, and similar events will hold quarterly,” she affirmed. She also emphasized that her department remains committed to initiatives that not only provide immediate relief but also strengthen long-term food security and resilience.

Excited residents at the venue welcomed the effort, with many saying the intervention not only put food on their tables but also rekindled their hope in the power of government-private sector partnerships to transform lives
