A 30-year-old Togolese man named John Apiah has been detained by Ondo State Police Command officers on suspicion of participating in visa fraud and human trafficking in the state.
In the Oda axis of the state’s Akure South Local Government Area, Apiah was detained with two other foreigners, Blessings Assiah, 22, and Laro Larisa, 21.
Jimoh Abayomi, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, claims that John, the main suspect, used the two female accomplices to entice the victims to Nigeria.
The three victims, Kanate Dekadja, 35, Charity Paketerima, 27, and Mohammed Assiah, 25, were extorted for 1.6 million CFA under the guise of assisting them in obtaining foreign passports and American visas, the police spokeswoman continued.
According to Abayomi, the victims were saved after it was discovered through amazing information that they were being held in a residence in Oda town under dubious circumstances.
“The Commissioner of Police reiterated that the Command has repeatedly warned landlords and property owners to conduct proper background checks on prospective tenants and to be vigilant against allowing their premises to be used for criminal activities, stressing that such negligence would attract serious legal consequences,” the PPRO stated.
