The Defence Headquarters has finished its inquiry into sixteen military officers who were detained in October 2025 on suspicion of various forms of misconduct and violations of service rules, including allegations of conspiracy to topple the Federal Government.

On January 26, 2026, Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, issued a statement indicating that the Armed Forces of Nigeria had sent the investigation report to the relevant authorities as per current military regulations.

The statement indicated that the findings revealed some officers’ involvement in actions that contradicted military ethics and professional standards, including allegations of efforts to subvert constitutional authority.

“The comprehensive investigation process, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, has carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel. The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN,” part of the statement read.

It also stated that individuals determined to have cases to answer will be brought before the appropriate military judicial panels for trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other military regulations.
