A couple from Lagos, known only as Fred and Goodness, has been detained on suspicion of planning a phony kidnapping to extort 10 million naira from their family members and acquaintances.
According to police sources, the couple allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping on January 7 as a scheme to generate money for the husband’s return to the United States, after promised financial support from sponsors did not come through.
A source familiar with the investigation reports that the suspects reached out to members of both families and close friends, claiming abduction and demanding ransom for their release.
According to the tale, the families allegedly gathered N10 million in just three days to ensure their liberation.
“The so-called kidnapping was deliberately planned by the couple. The husband wanted to travel back to the U.S. but lacked funds. When expected support did not come, they jointly decided to stage the abduction to raise money,” the source said.
Additional information disclosed that the suspects reached a consensus on a site within a school in Cappa, Mushin, for the ransom to be delivered.
Operatives monitoring the area, however, became suspicious when the woman entered the premises alone and the man arrived shortly after.
“Their movements raised red flags. Both later came out together carrying a bag. When operatives stopped and searched them, the ransom money was found inside, leading to their immediate arrest, ” another police source said.
The woman was said to have acknowledged during questioning that she had promoted the scheme, although subsequent investigations verified that there had been no kidnapping.
Abimbola Addebisi, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development, stating that the suspects would be taken to court once investigations are completed.
