The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will temporarily suspend operations in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.
The announcement was made through a statement shared on the mission’s official X account on Thursday, confirming that both diplomatic offices will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day,” the mission said.
Regular diplomatic and consular activities are expected to resume once the public holiday concludes.
The temporary closure means routine services, including visa interviews, passport-related assistance, and other non-emergency consular activities, will not be available during the holiday period.
Juneteenth is commemorated every year on June 19 and serves as a significant milestone in American history, marking the end of slavery in the United States.
The date traces back to June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans that they had gained their freedom, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
The observance gained federal holiday status in 2021 after legislation was signed into law by former U.S. President Joe Biden.
Since its recognition as a federal holiday, government institutions across the United States, including embassies and consulates around the world, have observed the occasion annually.
