The Imo State Government has announced a ban on street trading, hawking, unauthorised roadside structures, as well as the loading and offloading of goods along major roads in Owerri, the state capital.

The affected routes include Rotobi, Royce and Douglas roads, all situated within the central areas of Owerri.

The directive was announced in a joint statement signed by the General Manager of the Owerri Capital Development Authority, OCDA, Franklin Nkem Nzewodo, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, Chinasa Nwaneri.

The officials explained that commercial activities along the major roads often obstruct traffic and could contribute to road accidents.

They identified Eke Ukwu Owerri Market, Relief Market, Cluster International Market and Egbeada International Market as the approved markets within Owerri Municipal.

The officials stressed that the affected roads are not authorised locations for trading activities.

The government also barred heavy-duty trucks, lorries and other vehicles from using the roads as points for loading, unloading or offloading goods.

“Traders, business operators, truck owners, drivers, and other affected persons have been directed to relocate their activities to approved markets, designated trading areas, and lawful loading points,” the government said.

Authorities warned that anyone who continues to violate the directive could face enforcement actions, including arrest, prosecution, payment of fines, confiscation of goods or vehicles, and the removal or demolition of unauthorised structures.
