British broadcaster Piers Morgan has declared that Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football has brought an end to the long-running debate over whether he or Cristiano Ronaldo is the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT).

Messi announced his decision to retire from international football on Monday after an illustrious career with the Argentina national team.

The Inter Miami forward finished his international career with 125 goals for Argentina, while Ronaldo has recorded 146 goals for Portugal.

Reacting to Messi’s retirement in a post on X, Morgan argued that Ronaldo should be regarded as the GOAT because of his superior international goalscoring record.

He said, “Lionel Messi quits international football, having scored 125 goals for Argentina, the second-highest number in football history.

“@Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for Portugal, the highest in football history. This settles the (GOAT) debate,” Morgan wrote.
