England winger, Anthony Gordon, has described Argentina captain Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer of all time.

Gordon made the remark after England suffered a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.

The forward’s goal proved insufficient as the Three Lions were eliminated, with Argentina booking their place in the World Cup final.

“I have watched Messi influence games at Barcelona for years, and today I realized he is even better than I thought,”

Gordon, who recently completed a move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, said during his post-match interview.

“When you have someone like Messi on your team, everything becomes easier. He only needed a moment to change the game, and that is exactly what happened tonight.

“That is why he is considered the greatest player of all time.”

Gordon will now turn his attention to helping Thomas Tuchel’s side secure victory against France in the World Cup third-place playoff scheduled for Saturday.
