Former Spain international, Gaizka Mendieta, has identified the two leading contenders for this season’s Ballon d’Or award.

Mendieta believes Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain’s teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, are currently the strongest candidates for football’s most prestigious individual honour.

The former midfielder said Messi could claim a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or if Argentina defeats Spain in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He also noted that Yamal remains a strong contender and could lift the award if Spain secures its second World Cup title.

Speaking to Goal, Mendieta said, “The World Cup serves as the pivotal factor for the Ballon d’Or. Just as Harry Kane may have earned it, Lamine Yamal could also achieve this. He has had an outstanding season despite facing injuries and has been crucial for Barcelona.

“He continues to be essential for Spain. If Spain triumphs, we should consider their roster for potential candidates. Mikel Oyarzabal is another exceptional player that has gained recognition. If Argentina prevails, Messi will undoubtedly win it.”

Messi has scored eight goals and registered four assists during the ongoing tournament in North America.

Yamal, meanwhile, has found the back of the net once in seven appearances at the competition so far.
