Argentina will face Spain in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.

The highly anticipated encounter carries several intriguing storylines.

One of the biggest talking points is the showdown between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

Nearly 19 years ago, Messi, then an emerging Barcelona sensation, was famously photographed bathing baby Yamal.

Now, both stars are set to lead their respective nations in pursuit of football immortality.

Speaking to ZINGTIE, sports analyst, reporter and News Central producer, Ope Adebari, said, “For Messi, winning the World Cup cements his legacy as the greatest of all time in football.

“For Yamal, it will be the beginning of his legacy in football.

“Also, I believe Messi will win the Ballon d’Or award if Argentina wins the World Cup.”

The final will also pit the reigning world champions against the current European champions.

Although the scheduled Finalissima between Argentina and Spain earlier this year was cancelled, destiny has now brought the two football heavyweights together in a battle for the sport’s biggest trophy.

Adebari further stated, “I have no doubts that it’s the best two teams that made it to the final.

“Both teams earned their spots by showing quality when it mattered the most and they have been rewarded for their hard work and consistency.

“I think the game will be highly entertaining. We should expect a repeat of the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

“I believe it’s the fine margins that would allow either team to be victorious.”

Sunday’s showdown will mark the 104th match of the expanded 48-team World Cup tournament.

The third-place playoff produced a remarkable 10-goal contest, with England defeating France 6-4 to secure the bronze medal.

“Honestly, this tournament has pleasantly surpassed my expectations,” Adebari said.

“We had quality football matches between teams who were desperate to win.

“The level of competition was high in comparison to previous editions. No win came easy in this tournament.”
