The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Adewole Adebayo, has pledged to install solar panels on the rooftops of Nigerians within 11 months of assuming office if elected in the 2027 presidential election.

Adebayo made the commitment on Tuesday while responding to questions during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.

He faulted previous approaches to rural electrification, arguing that they concentrated on costly 33 kVA power lines rather than embracing decentralised solar energy solutions.

The SDP candidate urged the Federal Government to encourage local production of rooftop solar panels and equip communities with the necessary skills, instead of relying heavily on expensive conventional grid-based electrification.

“Between 11 and 15 kW of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months of my presidency.

“In 2001, the Obasanjo administration invited me, and I advised them to enter into an agreement with China or India, set up a factory to make solar panels, and train people to install them.

“Every Local Government Area has money that they steal every month to capitalise on this,” he said.
