In the process of assisting Jose Peseiro’s team to advance to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final following their victory over South Africa in the semi-final match, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali smashed a record that had stood for 22 years on Wednesday.
During the competition, the Nigerian goalkeeper with the most minutes played without letting a goal was broken by the Chippa United keeper.
He overtook former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu, who participated in two AFCON competitions.
For six AFCON games, Shorunmu went 450 minutes without giving up a goal.
But Nwabali beat the record, which had lasted for precisely 22 years, in the 47th minute of the match against South Africa.
As Teboho Mokoena defeated him from the penalty spot in the final minute of play, resulting in a 1-1 draw, Nwabali currently owns the record for the most extended clean sheet among Nigerian goalkeepers. He went six games without giving up a point.
The 27-year-old saved two penalties in the shootout, helping Nigeria defeat Bafana Bafana 4-2 and secure a meeting with Ivory Coast in the final.
