The Rivers State House of Assembly has reversed its earlier decision to declare the seats of three lawmakers loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara vacant.

The decision was taken during plenary on Monday, following recent reconciliation efforts aimed at resolving the prolonged political crisis in the state.

The lawmakers affected are Victor Oko-Jumbo, representing Bonny; Adolphus Timothy Oruibienimigha of Opobo/Nkoro; and Sokari Goodboy Sokari of Ahoada West.

During the sitting, the Assembly read a letter submitted by the three legislators, in which they stated that they had not received the correspondence directing them to return to legislative duties following the President’s intervention in the crisis.

The lawmakers also tendered an apology to the House, which the Assembly accepted.

Following the development, the lawmakers were directed to resume their legislative responsibilities.

The decision comes after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, led stakeholders of the Rainbow Coalition to visit Governor Fubara again on Sunday at his private residence in Port Harcourt.

The three legislators were suspended on October 30, 2023, when the Assembly first moved to impeach Governor Fubara.

They have remained absent from legislative sittings for almost three years.

Their reinstatement comes amid questions from some stakeholders about the nature of the recent reconciliation process spearheaded by Wike.

Some critics have described the process as one-sided, arguing that it did not initially address the lawmakers’ return to the Assembly.

Despite the latest development, the three legislators are not expected to return to the House after the current tenure, as they were all screened out of the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election process.
