A 27-year-old Nigerian immigrant named Elvis Onwubolo crossed the Mediterranean to reach Italy, but he has since failed to return to Nigeria by the same route.

The Nigerian who had entered the European nation in 2016 through the Mediterranean, a well-known illegal migration route, decided to go back to his native country after realising he missed his family and felt it would be best to be with them again, according to an Infomigrants article published on December 25.

However, he got lost while attempting to travel by water to Nigeria, and the Italian police discovered him in Linosa, a small Sicilian island in southern Italy.

“I didn’t find a job in Italy, no one helped me and I felt all alone. In the last few years, I feel [sic] that I was going slowly mad. Only my faith in Jesus has helped sustain me,” said Onwubolo.

He made the decision to begin the long journey home in early December and boarded a train to Sicily.

He thought he would be able to reach the Mediterranean by hiding in the back of a truck once he was in Sicily. But before it stopped, the truck did not reach Lampedusa, an Italian island that was quite near to the sea.

The cops quickly found Onwubolo and brought him to a reception centre. It was at this location that Italian authorities learnt the Nigerian had acquired a four-year (2020–2024) resident permit.

Currently, Onwubolo is being assisted by the Italian Christian organisation Communità di Sant’Egidio to return to Nigeria legally.
