Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, has been accused of banditry. The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has called for his immediate dismissal, calling the accusations “shocking and deeply troubling.”

Nigerians should be treated with responsibility and transparency, the student body stated in a statement issued on Monday by Usman Adamu Nagwaza, President of the NANS Headquarters Senate.

The association emphasized that the public must be shielded from abuse of power and stated that it was dedicated to combating corruption and making sure public servants were held accountable for their deeds.

Concerned about Matawalle’s purported connection to bandits, NANS described it as a “serious breach of trust” that called into doubt his honesty and capacity to continue in government.

The statement emphasized that given the minister’s responsibility for protecting the country from security concerns, the accusations were very troubling.

“His alleged relationship with bandits is a betrayal of the trust reposed in him by the Nigerian people and undermines the government’s efforts to combat insecurity,” the association said.

In order to guarantee a fair and impartial investigation, stop more harm to national security, and rebuild public trust, NANS insisted that Matawalle be removed pending a thorough investigation.

The student organization cautioned that the minister’s purported connections to criminals would encourage banditry and exacerbate the displacement of innocent Nigerians.

Additionally, it threatened to mobilize students countrywide to block major roadways if the government did not take action, and it issued a one-week ultimatum for his dismissal.

The group also warned that Nigerians would not put up with corruption or collaboration with terrorism and urged President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action.

“It is essential that the government takes decisive action to address these allegations. The rule of law must be upheld, and all wrongdoing punished,” NANS stated.
