George Tunah, Caretaker Chairman and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, has stated that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) does not possess the constitutional authority to appoint or remove national officers.

Tunah made this assertion on Thursday during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a programme aired on Channels Television.

His comments follow the backlash surrounding the reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as PDP’s National Secretary—a move opposed by 11 members of the party’s National Working Committee.

Earlier on Wednesday, PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had addressed the press, announcing the cancellation of a scheduled NEC meeting and the return of Anyanwu to his role as secretary.

Tunah, however, maintained that no valid 99th NEC session ever took place. He pointed out that the party’s constitution clearly outlines the procedures for convening a NEC meeting, including who is authorized to issue the notice.

“By our constitution, a national officer of the party is elected at the national convention for a secure term of for years. Now, this term of office can only be cut short either by removal, resignation, or other processes enabled by the constitution.

“The only organ of our party that has the powers by our constitution to elect or remove national officers is the convention, not even the NEC.

“Now, unlike the situation when the constitution allows the NWC to make decisions on behalf of the NEC in the case of emergency, it is not the same with the national convention.

“No section of our constitution gives any power to even the NEC to make any decision on behalf of the convention. Whatever is restricted to the convention must be done by the convention,” he added.
