The marriage of two young “birds” who fell in love without their parents’ approval has been dissolved by the Kano State Hisbah Board.

After their families forbade their union, the pair, known as Aliyu Mukhtar and Fatima, who both lived in Kano’s Yakasai neighborhood, reportedly held their wedding ceremony in secret.

After his father denied him permission to marry her, 22-year-old Aliyu, the groom, claims he made the decision to go forward with the marriage: “When I told him I wanted to marry her, he said I was too young and he won’t allow it.”

Because he is still in her senior year of high school, the adolescent bride’s family disapproved of the relationship.

Without any help, the couple decided to get married without telling their parents or guardians. The Nikkah was conducted swiftly, with their friends serving as their guardians.

Their families reacted negatively to their choice and asked the Hisbah Board to step in and look into how the young people were able to be married without their parents’ approval.

The Hisbah Board came to the conclusion that although the marriage did not directly violate any laws or religious precepts, it did not have the required approval from both families, which is a crucial component in accordance with Islamic marriage customs and local traditions. As a result, the marriage has been dissolved immediately.

Neither Aliyu nor Fatima had made any public remarks on their divorce as of the time this story was filed.
