In Woolwich, two adolescent boys were imprisoned for the cold-blooded murder of 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa on the upper deck of a public bus.

Hopeful and just entering adolescence, Kelyan was trapped and repeatedly slashed with machetes by two 16-year-old lads who recognized him and grinned before they began their assault.

CCTV footage of the assault on the bus shows the teenagers delivering at least eight fatal strikes and more than 27 attempts to injure with startling speed and ferocity.

As they escaped the chaotic scene on Woolwich Church Street, terrified passengers yelled in terror and frantically flagged down policemen.

Officers and paramedics did their best to save Kelyan, but it was not enough. He passed away on the street, his future buried beneath blood-stained pavement, his existence snuffed out in a matter of seconds.

Before fleeing, the attackers—who are not allowed to be identified for legal reasons—were seen throwing their murder weapon into the river.

A little more than a week later, they were arrested in Eltham after a manhunt. They received concurrent sentences at the Old Bailey of at least 15 years and 10 months for murder and 12 months for possessing a weapon.

In a heartbreaking testimony given in court, the victim’s mother, Marie Bokassa, said: “My child had a name. It was Kelyan, a future, a heartbeat full of hope. That moment of violence may have lasted seconds, but the consequences are eternal. They didn’t just take a life; they shattered a world.”

“To the young people who carry knives, I beg you: think of your mother before you raise that blade. Don’t let anger turn you into a killer.”

The lead investigator, Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lee, stated: “The fact we’re seeing so many teenagers like Kelyan die should be at the forefront of the minds of every politician and policymaker.”
