Chinese President Xi Jinping has voiced his willingness to collaborate with leaders from the European Union to boost mutual openness and address disagreements constructively.

As reported by the official Xinhua news agency, his comments were made during the commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, as both sides aim to ease tensions during a time of global trade uncertainty caused by broad U.S. tariffs.

Though Xi avoided mentioning the U.S. directly, China has been actively seeking stronger economic and diplomatic ties with Europe in response to the impact of tariffs introduced under President Donald Trump, which target the majority of Chinese goods shipped to the U.S.

“Healthy, stable China-EU ties not only promote mutual achievements, but also illuminate the world,” he said.

According to Xinhua, Xi called on the EU to help uphold fairness and justice while opposing unilateral coercion, characterizing their partnership as among the most significant globally.

China has extended an invitation to European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to visit at a suitable time for a new round of bilateral leadership meetings.

During a Tuesday press briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian announced that China and the EU plan to hold top-level discussions on strategic affairs, trade, green technology, and digital transformation as part of this year’s cooperative efforts.

The ministry also revealed that arrangements have been made to facilitate exchanges between China and the European Parliament.

Last week, the EU noted that China had agreed to lift restrictions on European Parliament members and its human rights subcommittee.

These sanctions were originally enacted in 2021 following Western actions targeting Chinese authorities linked to the alleged mass internment of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.

“Under the current circumstances, both sides believe it is very important for China and Europe to strengthen dialogue and cooperation,” Lin, the ministry spokesperson, told reporters.

He expressed optimism that the revival of talks would bring new momentum to the China-EU relationship.
