Residents of Gaida in Kano State have been left grieving and bewildered following the discovery of the body of popular commentator and critic, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, in a pool of blood.

The incident has raised concerns, particularly because the late commentator had, in several videos shared online and monitored by DAILY POST, alleged that some individuals were plotting against his life.

In one of the videos, he accused children of his neighbours of allegedly teaming up against him, while claiming that their parents were aware of the situation but failed to intervene.

He said: “One of my neighbour’s sons asked me for sadaka (alms). I do give the children sweets sometimes, and I told him I don’t have any now, but I will get some later. The little boy insulted me.
“Later, his older brother asked for the same thing, and I told him I do not have any sweets on me at the moment.”

The deceased further alleged that some of the boys in the neighbourhood later threatened to kill him, claiming that their parents did nothing to stop them.

He also alleged that some of the boys attacked his residence with stones, damaging his television in the process.

Dan Shagamu said the traditional authorities in his community had also failed to resolve the alleged threats, prompting him to appeal to the police and the Kano Emir for intervention.

Dan Shagamu a fierce critic

In 2022, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu was arrested and brought before a Kano court over allegations of defaming former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd.).

The late commentator had shared a video in which he accused Buratai of constructing more than 60 filling stations in Kano using proceeds allegedly obtained from an arms deal.

A High Court presided over by Justice Halima A.B. Wali ordered that he be remanded and referred him to a psychiatrist to determine his mental fitness at the time he made the video.

Beyond the case involving Buratai, Dan Shagamu was also known for his outspoken criticism of the APC-led government. He had equally engaged in disputes with some members of the Izala group, as he alleged in one of his videos.

Speaking with journalists in Kano, one of his sisters, Malama Halima, described the circumstances surrounding his death as gruesome.

She said, “He had alleged that some people were after his life, so he stopped sleeping at home. He stayed with a friend and avoided anywhere where he sensed a threat.

“Some people came to him, trying to take him away in the name of a palliative by Bola Tinubu. They later asked him to go to a place opposite Sahad where he would get a cod. But he was sceptical about it, so he did not go.”

According to her, the friend later returned to the house where they had been staying but discovered that the door was locked.

She explained that the friend subsequently went to the location where they usually ate noodles and eggs before returning to the house the following day, only to find it still locked, prompting him to contact the police.

She said her brother’s eyes had been knocked in, while his head was severed and his body was tightly wrapped in one of his blankets, which had soaked up the blood from the wound.

Muhammad Hizbullah Kabiru, the deceased critic’s nephew, told journalists that they reached the residence after receiving directions to the location.

“When we got there with the police, we jumped over the house. We found him dead with his head almost severed completely. Only the last bone was attached,” he said.

Kano govt, police respond

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reacted to the incident through a statement issued by his aide, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The governor appealed to residents of Kano State to remain peaceful and refrain from resorting to self-help, assuring them that his administration would continue collaborating with security agencies to safeguard lives and property throughout the state.

He also instructed the DSS and other security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command announced that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the murder.

CSP Kiyawa said: “The suspects are currently in custody undergoing interrogation. The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend any other persons who may be connected to the crime. Statements are being obtained, and forensic procedures are ongoing to establish the full facts and motive behind the attack.”

The police added that investigations were still underway and that the suspects would be arraigned in court once the investigation had been concluded.
