Insisting that the North continues to support President Bola Tinubu, Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, has rejected recent remarks made by Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, about the president’s chances of winning reelection in 2027.

Matawalle characterized Lawal’s statement as an effort to sow discord in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

He emphasized that President Tinubu has advanced governance significantly, especially in the areas of infrastructure, economic reform, and security.

“The North remains steadfast in its support for President Tinubu,” Matawalle said.

“Any insinuation to the contrary is a deliberate attempt to sow discord and undermine our national unity.”

The minister outlined some of the accomplishments of the Tinubu administration, pointing out that in 2024 alone, security forces had captured 11,600 criminals, destroyed over 8,000 terrorists and bandits, and retrieved over 10,000 firearms.

“Additionally, the successful rescue of approximately 8,000 kidnap victims shows government’s commitment to protecting all citizens.”

Regarding economic growth, Matawalle emphasized that Tinubu’s government has given top priority to infrastructural initiatives that are essential to the advancement of the North, such as building new roads and enhancing the transportation system.

Additionally, he emphasized the government’s efforts to grant local governments autonomy, which he claimed had improved grassroots governance.

Instead of discounting Tinubu’s efforts, he challenged his detractors to evaluate his scorecard impartially.

“We must unite in our support for Mr. President as he continues to work towards a prosperous and secure Nigeria. Our support for President Tinubu is unshakeable. We stand firmly behind his vision for a better Nigeria.”
