Umar Damagum, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called the wholesale defection of Delta’s elected officials, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) “painful and disappointing.”

Damagum said this in Abuja during a ceremony when Mr. Jude Ezenwafor, the party’s candidate for governor of Anambra, received a Certificate of Return.

Given the amount of support the party provided to the state in earlier elections, he said the mass defection was disheartening.

“It is very sad and unfortunate because to me, if there’s any state that should think that way, not Delta, because the party is very magnanimous.

“I thank God that in their message, they didn’t say that the party did anything wrong to them other than good.

“It’s a decision taken by them, but the pains will be in us not because of anything, but because we gave Delta all our support, from the emergence of the governor to his predecessor, who also doubled as our vice presidential candidate.

“We least expected this action from them. All the same, this is a party that have seen more than that, but it’s still standing,” he said.

In order to establish a caretaker committee for the party in the state, Damagum pointed out that the party leadership was conducting an assessment.

“I want to use this opportunity to say, we’ll take over our structures immediately,” he said.

According to him, Nigerians would be the focus of the 2027 election, not the number of governors a party has.

Damagum said that no obstacle is insurmountable and encouraged all party members to unite in order to save Nigeria. He

He expressed confidence that Ezenwafor will win the election and congratulated him on becoming the party’s candidate in Anambra.
