Musa reveals what allegedly happened in Southern Kaduna under El-Rufai

The Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of actions that allegedly worsened divisions and insecurity in the state during his tenure.

Musa made the allegations on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

The Defence Minister described the security situation in Kaduna under El-Rufai as “toxic”, alleging that the former governor created divisions within the state that restricted movement between Southern and Northern Kaduna.

He said, “El-Rufai did a lot of terrible things in Kaduna State. He divided the state into two. In that, if you are from the south, you cannot go to the north to live. Those from the north were moving to the south,” Musa said.

Musa further alleged that residents of Southern Kaduna continued to harbour grievances against the former governor over killings recorded in the area during his administration.

Asked during the programme whether people from Southern Kaduna were still unhappy with El-Rufai, Musa responded: “If there is anything worse than unhappy. We can never be happy with somebody who has deliberately planned for the killing of our people.”

The minister also alleged that El-Rufai had admitted to paying bandits and accused the former governor of using his office against people with whom he had disagreements.

“He told us he paid bandits. He told us he did this; he did that. He didn’t hide it,” Musa alleged.

Musa further accused the former governor of ordering the demolition of properties belonging to individuals he allegedly had personal disagreements with.

Despite his criticisms, Musa said he did not regard El-Rufai as an enemy, but described him as “misguided”.

The Defence Minister stressed that his position was not influenced by his Kaduna origin, explaining that he was speaking from the standpoint of a Nigerian concerned about the country’s unity.

He urged politicians to refrain from exploiting ethnic and religious differences and instead work toward strengthening unity among Nigerians.

El-Rufai, who served as Kaduna State governor between 2015 and 2023, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations made by Musa.
