The member representing Surulere Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliott, has expressed doubts about politicians switching political parties, arguing that such moves may not deliver the kind of transformation Nigeria requires.
Elliott shared his views during an appearance on The Morayo Show, where he spoke on governance, leadership and the current political landscape in the country.
The lawmaker stated that he does not subscribe to the idea of moving from one political camp to another in search of change, insisting that effective leadership is measured by results rather than political affiliation.
According to him, his years of representation in Surulere have brought visible improvements in areas such as electricity supply and healthcare delivery.
“My own kind of politician, I don’t steal money. If you look at Surulere 10 years ago, it was a horrible place to live in, but now there’s electricity, healthcare and all,” he said.
The actor-turned-politician also maintained that holding public office should not be seen as a position of superiority.
He noted that leadership is temporary and should be approached with humility and a commitment to service, adding that many public office holders fail to realise that political power is not permanent.
Elliott further questioned the idea of changing political alliances, suggesting that such decisions may not necessarily bring about the desired national progress.
“I’m not sure. I ask myself, if I leave Asiwaju and I go to Obi, what is the difference between Asiwaju and Obi? If I leave Obi and I go to Atiku, what is the difference? ” he asked.
