Ebonyi court sentence four electricity vandals to seven years imprisonment

In response to a three-count charge of conspiracy, vandalism, and property theft of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Ikechukwu Esseh, Ikedinachi Uche, Ukpai Godwin, and Uchenna Kalu were sentenced to seven years in prison by an Ebonyi State High Court in Afikpo, presided over by Justice Nicholas E. Nwode.

Mr. Emeka Ezeh, Group Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, announced this development in Enugu on Wednesday.

On November 28, 2023, the inmates were taken into custody for assaulting an EEDC 7.5 MVA injection substation along Education Board Road, Afikpo, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

According to Ezeh, the presiding judge sentenced the accused to five years in prison on count one, seven years in prison on count two, and five years in prison on count three, to run concurrently without the possibility of a fine, after carefully examining all of the evidence that was presented to him and taking into account the high frequency of electrical installation theft and vandalism in Afikpo.

The EEDC management praised the court’s decision and urged that other outstanding cases be tried quickly.

“We commend the judiciary for the judgement and hope that this will serve as a deterrent to others out there who may engage in such criminal acts.”

The business also praised the Afikpo Task Force Team and the General Youth President for organizing to capture these vandals, which is a definite sign of community cooperation and support for safeguarding electrical infrastructure.

Customers were urged by Ezeh to support initiatives to protect installations in their community.

He lamented the way vandals’ actions have harmed the business’s operations and the caliber of services it provides to its clients.

“As a result, we continue to commit scarce resources to restore vandalized equipment—funds that would ordinarily be channeled to other areas of our operations that will benefit our customers,” Ezeh noted.

He warned that such instances invariably result in service failure and inconvenience, and he urged customers to be attentive and protect neighborhood power installations from vandalism.
