Ex-SGF Boss Mustapha denies looting $6.3m from CBN vault

Boss Mustapha, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), denied a report that claimed he was involved in the unauthorised removal of $6.3 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the former president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

A special investigator reportedly discovered the purported crime that President Bola Tinubu appointed. It is said that the theft took place on February 8, 2023, a few weeks before the presidential election.

The article further claimed that Mustapha ordered the cash to be removed on the pretence of paying for foreign election observation missions, together with the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

According to the investigator’s report, CCTV footage showed the money being transported out of the CBN.

But Mustapha vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “outrageous and unsubstantiated,” in a signed statement he provided reporters on Saturday.

He called the accusation a “malicious fabrication” and an “orchestrated” effort to damage my name and destroy my character.

The former SGF went on to say that he was unaware of the alleged “Presidential Directive” used in the report to support the withdrawal.

He declared that he had never participated in any talks or exchanges pertaining to any compensation for the services of foreign poll monitors.

Mustapha questioned the allegation’s timing, citing the fact that it was released during the “sensitive pre-Christmas period” as evidence that it was an intentional attempt to sow suspicion and capitalise on public sentiment.

The former SGF urged the authorities to “probe the source of the fabricated documents” and identify individuals responsible for the “smear” campaign, calling for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the situation.

He made the same pleas to the media and the general public to use critical thinking skills and resist falling for false information.
