Violent attacks appear to have resurfaced in Anambra State after unidentified gunmen reportedly assaulted operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, killing at least two officers.

The state had experienced relative calm for several months following intensified crackdowns on criminal elements, particularly gunmen posing as Biafra agitators, before Sunday night’s attack.

The incident reportedly occurred along the Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road, where the assailants allegedly intercepted policemen on patrol and opened fire on them, leaving two officers dead on the highway.

A commercial tricycle operator who was travelling along the route on Sunday night and witnessed the incident said he suddenly heard gunshots ahead, forcing him to abandon his tricycle and flee into nearby bushes for safety.

In a voice recording circulated afterward, he said: “After sometime, I came out of the bush and retrieved my Keke and continued my journey, then I got to the spot where the thing happened.

“Two policemen are lying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the road side. I decided to make this voice note to post on the platform because I think one of the policemen is still alive, so that anyone who knows police authorities will tell them to go and save their members,” the distressed keke rider stated.

When ZINGTIE contacted the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, for comments regarding the incident, his phone line could not be reached.

As of the time this report was filed, the police authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
