Female student attacks people with hammer in campus, leaving eight injured

A female student went on a rampage at a Tokyo university, resulting in a hammer attack that injured eight people.

According to Japanese media, a lady in her 20s who is allegedly a student at Hosei campus was detained after being pulled over by campus employees.

According to police reports, the attack happened at the university’s Tama Campus in the western Tokyo district of Machida at approximately 4 p.m. local time (7 a.m. UK time), and all of the injured are reportedly conscious.

At the campus in the Japanese capital’s suburban Machida area, a queue of emergency cars with flashing lights was visible in live NHK television.

Police were unable to establish details of the rarely violent crime in Japan, which has strict gun control laws.

There are occasional stabbings and even gunshots in Japan, including the assassination of former prime leader Shinzo Abe in 2022.

At a McDonald’s restaurant in southwestern Japan in December, a junior high school student was fatally stabbed and another was injured. Later, a man was taken into custody for the assault.

Around 8.30 p.m., the teenagers were waiting in queue to place their orders when the assailant allegedly entered the Kitakyushu restaurant and stabbed them both.
