Fresh Fear as New Incident Rocks Major South-East Highway

An atmosphere of fear has enveloped motorists and residents following another wave of suspected armed robbery attacks along the Nawfia section of the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, with reports indicating that one person lost their life in the latest incident.

The alarm was raised by a social media user, who lamented the deteriorating security situation on the busy highway and appealed to the Anambra State Government and security agencies to intervene before more casualties are recorded.

According to the individual, residents of Nawfia have on several occasions voiced concerns over the recurring activities of suspected armed robbers who reportedly target motorists along that section of the expressway.

He noted that the community recently carried out a large-scale environmental sanitation exercise in an effort to reduce the attacks.

“During the exercise, they cleared thick vegetation and removed logs allegedly used by the criminals to barricade sections of the road and trap unsuspecting travellers.

“Despite the community’s efforts, the robbers have continued to strike with what residents described as increasing boldness,” he said.

The most recent attack, which was reportedly captured in a video now circulating online, allegedly claimed one life, raising fresh concerns among motorists using the route.

The source urged security operatives to step up surveillance along the expressway, deploy routine patrols, and dismantle suspected criminal hideouts operating within the area.

He emphasized that the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway remains one of the busiest roads in the South-East and should not be abandoned to the activities of criminal gangs.

Residents and commuters also appealed to the Anambra State Government, the police, the military, and other security agencies to urgently collaborate in restoring security and ensuring the safety of travellers along the highway.

As of the time this report was filed, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to release an official statement regarding the reported incident.
