The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has cautioned that anyone considering a coup in Nigeria is “wasting their time,” insisting that Nigerians would resist any attempt to overthrow democratic rule.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Musa stated that democracy remained preferable to military governance and emphasized that the Armed Forces were fully committed to safeguarding the nation’s democratic system.
The minister, who referenced a previous coup investigation in which he was involved, said he and other senior officers were part of those who uncovered and reported the alleged plot, adding that he also led the committee that handled the investigation.
Musa described individuals linked to the alleged coup attempt as “confused individuals” who misled junior officers into participating in the act.
The defence minister further noted that personnel of the Armed Forces had been adequately catered for, stating that salaries had been paid without issues while efforts continued to improve allowances and provide more operational equipment for troops engaged in counter-insurgency operations.
Musa maintained that any attempt to carry out a coup would fail, adding that even civilians would resist such actions.
