Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has voiced confidence in Nigeria’s leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for support toward his re-election to maintain ongoing reforms and developmental progress.
Fubara made this known on Thursday during a meeting of the Southern Traditional Rulers Council in Port Harcourt, where monarchs from all 17 southern states convened to deliberate on unity, security, and economic advancement.
The governor observed that despite existing challenges, the current administration has achieved notable milestones in economic recovery and infrastructure development, referencing initiatives such as the coastal road project.
He stressed the need for continuity in leadership, noting that “it is not ideal to change the goalposts in the middle of the game”.
Fubara urged stakeholders across the southern region to work together toward shared objectives, emphasizing that unity remains a critical factor for sustainable development.
He further noted that the turnout of traditional rulers at the gathering underscores the peaceful atmosphere in Rivers State and its readiness to host significant national events.
Earlier, the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who serves as chairman of the Southern Traditional Rulers Council, stated that the meeting was designed to foster peace and strengthen unity across the region.
He highlighted Nigeria’s cultural diversity, noting that over 400 dialects are spoken across the southern states, and described the gathering as a strong representation of unity in diversity.
Ogunwusi added that the Port Harcourt meeting was the fourth in the series, following earlier sessions held in Imo, Ogun, and Lagos states.
According to him, the platform enables traditional rulers to engage on shared values and common interests that bind their communities.
He also stated that the council would consider ways to support the current administration in addressing security and economic challenges, noting that although participation is voluntary, it remains essential for repositioning both the region and the country.
The meeting attracted prominent traditional rulers from the South-South, South-East, and South-West regions, including the council’s co-chairman, the Obi of Obinugwu, Eze Cletus Illomuanya, and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.
