Housemaid sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of FUT Minna lecturer

A High Court in Minna, Niger State, has sentenced 16-year-old Joy Afekafe to life in prison for the murder of Dr. Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, following nearly two years of court procedures.

Afekafe was found guilty on two counts of armed robbery and culpable homicide, offenses punishable under Sections 221 and 298 of the Penal Code, in the verdict handed down by Justice Aishetu Mohammed of High Court No. 4 on Wednesday.

Just 26 days after Afekafe returned to her job as a housemaid in her Gbaiko, Minna, residence, Adefolalu was brutally killed on October 28, 2023.

The adolescent plotted with two accomplices, DJ Wallex and DJ Smart, who are still at large, according to court findings to attack and murder the lecturer following her termination for theft.

Justice Mohammed declared in his ruling that the prosecution had shown its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The death of Dr. Mrs. Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu was caused by the convict with her friends, now at large, when they used knives to stab her several times and eventually hit her with a wooden stool to kill her,” the judge stated.

After being introduced to the family by a local preacher, the prisoner admitted during questioning that she had planned retaliation after being let off.

She went inside the house with her friends, stabbed the lecturer with knives, and then struck him to death with a wooden stool. In addition, they took foreign currency, a laptop, and two phones from the house.

Following a two-hour ruling, Justice Mohammed imposed the life sentence, ending one of the most horrifying homicide cases in the state’s recent history.
