One-chance robbers brutally attacked and threw Miss Freda Arnong, a Ghanaian woman, out of a moving car, causing her death.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is where the tragic event took place.

Freda died from injuries sustained in the savage attack at around three in the morning on Sunday, July 7, 2025, after living and working in Abuja for almost twenty years.

According to her brother Arnong Arnong, Freda left a house fellowship near the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Institute in Maitama at around 7:00 p.m. on July 1 and boarded a taxi headed to Pope John Paul Street on the Transcorp Hilton route, where she resided. She was unaware that robbers were operating the vehicle.

Arnong said how his sister told him that the men had blindfolded and severely abused her shortly after she got into the car. They then asked that she give them access to her bank app and phone.

According to him, Freda was not tech-savvy and had lost her ATM card weeks before without getting a replacement.

The criminals intensified their onslaught in an attempt to seize her money. She volunteered to phone her job and ask them to give the N10 million, but they refused and threatened to cut her up and sell her body parts.

She was finally thrown from the moving automobile near Moshood Abiola Stadium at around 11:00 p.m.

When she was injured and helpless, she made an unsuccessful attempt to ask passing motorists for help. She was eventually saved by a local vigilante and brought to Abuja’s National Hospital.

According to medical scans, she had suffered serious trauma, including internal bleeding, lung lacerations, kidney damage, fractured posterior ribs, and injuries to her heart and eyes. Days later, she passed away in the hospital.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), meantime, has expressed sorrow over Freda’s death and bemoaned the fact that the criminals had been active for years, most likely as a result of the FCT’s political and security leaders’ failure to recognize the threats these terrorists pose to the populace.

In a statement released by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group emphasized that such an occurrence should never occur again and demanded justice for Freda and all other victims of the crime.

“This God-fearing, generous soul was known to us at HURIWA since the year of our inauguration about eighteen years ago, and she had consistently supported our work, just as she was a very great human rights person,”Onwubiko said.

“The details of her encounter are a reminder of the urgent need for the government to take steps to stamp out these terrorists disguised as robbers. The police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the military should set up strategic observatory points within the municipality of Abuja, just as the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) security project must be revived and completed.

“Installing CCTV around the FCT and operating functional monitoring systems and quick-response squads is much more urgent than building flyovers all over Abuja, as is currently being done by the politicians.

“What crime did Freda Arnong commit? Her only ‘crime’ was living in a beautiful city plagued by a broken system.

“How long will we keep losing innocent lives to the ‘one-chance’ criminal syndicates? When will public transportation be safe for everyone? When will our leaders prioritise technology-driven transport safety?

“We must demand a driver and vehicle authentication system, where commuters can verify the identity and registration of commercial vehicles and their drivers in real time before boarding.

“Freda cannot d!e in vain. Her k!llers must be found and prosecuted. There are countless families silently grieving loved ones lost to the same fate, abandoned by a system that failed to protect them. We must rise. We must demand change.”
