Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he must be involved in deciding who will be the next leader of Iran.

In an interview with Axios on Thursday, Trump remarked that Mojtaba Khamenei, the deceased leader’s 56-year-old son, is commonly seen as the probable successor, but he emphasized that he does not endorse this notion.

“They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight, I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela.” Trump said.

Trump was alluding to Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed the role of acting president of Venezuela this year when U.S. forces apprehended former leader Nicolás Maduro and brought him to New York for drug-related charges.

The president of the U.S. stated that he would refuse to accept any Iranian leader who aims to persist with the late Khamenei’s policies.

“Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump said.

Trump proposed earlier this week that a number of those who were previously viewed as potential successors have been killed in recent attacks connected to the ongoing conflict.

The comments were made in the context of rising tensions in the Middle East following a large-scale military operation by the U.S. and Israel aimed at multiple locations in Iran. This operation has led to retaliatory strikes throughout the region and heightened doubts about the future leadership of Iran.

Iran has not yet made an official announcement regarding a new Supreme Leader.
