After four traumatic years in Mali, where she was trafficked and forced into labor, Adeola, the daughter of seasoned Nollywood actress Jumoke George, has returned to Nigeria.

In a video posted to her YouTube account, Biola Adebayo described how a reliable family friend lured her in with the prospect of a lucrative pharmacy job overseas. She was informed that a Mali woman was looking for a worker with rudimentary medical skills.

Adeola accepted the deal without telling her family since she thought they would not approve and she wanted to start a better life. Her nightmare started in Mali, where she traveled for five days.

When she got there, she called her purported employer and found out that she had been sold for ₦1.5 million.

She now “belonged” to her buyer, the woman told her simply, and she would have to pay off the debt before she could leave.

“I was sh0cked and scàred. It felt like a tràp I couldn’t escape,” Adeola recounted.

Her experience highlights the dangers of human trafficking and the frequent deception of those who are trusted by those who are vulnerable.

Adeola returned home at last after years of forced labor and hàrdship. The emotional toll on the family is clear, even though her mother, Jumoke George, has not yet made a public statement.

Young Nigerians are starkly reminded by Adeola’s experience of the dangers of unauthorized migration and relying on unconfirmed job offers overseas.
