A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Peter Agada, has criticised the way President Bola Tinubu’s administration carried out the removal of fuel subsidy.
Agada argued that the policy ought to have been implemented gradually, alongside measures designed to lessen its impact on Nigerians.
He maintained that the concept behind removing the subsidy is economically justifiable, noting that global investors and international financial institutions often expect countries seeking financial assistance to liberalise their economies.
Speaking with journalists on Thursday, Agada explained that many nations rely on foreign investments, loans and support from international financial institutions to fund key sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure, stressing that such assistance usually comes with certain conditions.
“The economic policy that says, ‘Remove subsidy or you will not get our funding,’ is a major issue.
“I would not have removed the subsidy on my first day in office the way Tinubu did. I would have had a plan,” Agada said.
He further stated, “Because I know I must attract capital from the West and the global capitalist economy, I would still agree to remove the subsidy. In fact, I agree with the principle.
“It is not good to keep spoon-feeding people. It is better to teach people how to fish than to keep giving them fish,” he stated.
Agada, however, insisted that the government should have adopted a phased implementation strategy by rolling out support programmes alongside each stage of the subsidy removal.
“So, while the subsidy is gradually being removed, the people are also gradually being empowered to cope with the consequences of its removal,” he said.
