The death toll from a massive explosion at Iran’s largest port, Bandar Abbas, has reached 25, with over 700 people injured, according to state media reports on Sunday. Firefighters are still working to completely extinguish the blaze.

The explosion, believed to have been caused by chemical materials, occurred in the Shahid Rajaee section of the port, which is Iran’s main container hub.

State media stated that the blast’s force shattered windows over several kilometers around Bandar Abbas, a city strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz. The explosion also tore apart metal shipping containers and severely damaged the goods inside.

Iran’s crisis management organization reported that 752 individuals had received medical attention for their injuries, with 190 still undergoing treatment at healthcare centers.

Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, who visited the site, informed state television that by Sunday morning, 80% of the fire had been brought under control and firefighting efforts would continue for a few more hours.

Momeni also mentioned that some operations had resumed at parts of the Shahid Rajaee port that weren’t affected by the fire or damage.

While chemical materials are suspected to be involved, the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered an investigation into the incident.

A spokesperson from the crisis management organization speculated on Saturday that the blast could have been caused by improper storage of chemicals at the port, adding that earlier safety warnings had pointed out potential hazards.
