Biodun Otunola, Managing Director and CEO of Planet Project Ltd, has revealed that the newly built Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals were developed to handle over 10,000 passengers daily at each location.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during the commissioning of the Kugbo terminal an event marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office Otunola shared insights into the scale and capacity of the infrastructure.
According to him, both facilities are structured to accommodate up to 120 buses and taxis daily, serving both intra-city and inter-city routes. He added that a third terminal currently under construction in the Central Business District (CBD) is being designed solely for intra-city transport, with a slightly different operational model.
“We can take over 120 buses here and we’ve designed this place such that it can handle up to 10,000 passengers every day.
“It’s the same thing with the one in Mabushi as well. The same concept but the one at CBD, which is the third one, is a bit different,” he said.
Highlighting the employment potential, Otunola noted that each terminal would generate no fewer than 100 jobs across various departments including ticketing, maintenance, control operations, electrical and mechanical services, and facility management.
“It’s very huge. It’s like running a mini airport,” he said.
He described the terminals as modern transit centers built to international standards, aimed at improving commuter experience and safety. The facilities include air-conditioned waiting areas, loading bays, eateries, a cinema, and public restrooms. They are also equipped with escalators, elevators, and dedicated ticketing zones.
“We also have escalators, we have lifts and we have a ticketing area. So, the era of stressing yourself because you are traveling is over,” he said.
He emphasized that the terminals would allow travelers to move with peace of mind, in a safe, clean, and well-organized environment.
Otunola expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for entrusting the execution of the project to a local contractor, praising their faith in Planet Project Ltd’s capacity to deliver world-class infrastructure.
“Although this is not the first we have executed, but to have pioneered this in the FCT is no doubt a very major achievement for us.
“We are grateful to President Tinubu for giving us this opportunity and also the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike because if they don’t believe in us, they will not try us and they wouldn’t have achieved this result,” he said.
He also lauded the decision to hand over the terminals to private operators, emphasizing that public-private partnerships are key to effective transport management.
According to Otunola, at least 12 such terminals are needed across the FCT to meet commuter demand. He mentioned potential sites in Gwagwalada, Kuje, Lugbe, Gwarinpa, and central zones such as Area 1, Area 3, and Wuse.
Earlier at the event, President Tinubu—represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio—stated that the new terminals would help organize urban transport, promote trade, and ensure commuter safety and convenience.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, in his remarks, thanked the President for his backing on transportation reforms in the capital. He added that with these terminals in operation, commuters would no longer be vulnerable to roadside crimes such as “one chance,” as they would now board vehicles from secure, designated areas.
